Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
