He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – really, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, over decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or nones. The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
