Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
