An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
